Current and future applications of molecular biology in management of cancer with references to current World Health Organization of Classification of tumours

The use of molecular biology is now part of the routine clinical practice in the management of cancers as well as in oncology researches.  For instance, 54 different biomarkers are mentioned 98 times across the gastrointestinal tract book chapters of the most current edition of the World Health Organization classification.  These markers were use in the identification of mutations for predicting of response for target therapies for cancers as well as in the classification of subtypes of cancers.  Improvement of the management of patients with cancer will require translation research.  These may include proper request of molecular tests, biobanking (tissue and liquid), use of tissue microarray, applications of artificial intelligence, understanding the roles of animal models.  In addition, structured protocol for cancer reporting is being developed for international use to streamline the data collection for research and management of patients with cancer.  To conclude, we need to aware that molecular research on cancer tissue is important for current management and research for patients with cancers.Multidisciplinary team approach is the model for the successful applications of molecular biology in these aspects.
